Wasting Our Tax Dollars

šŸš€ Whatā€™s happening: The government is barreling towards yet another shutdown at the end of this month because Congressā€” like a kid with tooth fairy money at a toy storeā€” canā€™t figure out what to spend it on. In this weekā€™s Main Course weā€™ll go through whatā€™s happening, what is likely to happen in the future, and give you a simple breakdown of what the government is actually spending our money on each year so you can have a discussion about this with your family.

šŸ‘Ŗ Closer to home: Weā€™ll talk about how a shutdown might affect families, give you actionable tips to give these children people less of your tax dollars (legal tips, of course!), and also review a few safe investment options right now to get the government owing you money instead of the other way around.

Money Trends To Know

šŸ¦ The Fed stays put. The Federal Reserve held interest rates steady last week, but the bigger takeaway was their change in thinking around the future. They now expect interest rates at the end of 2024 to be 5.1% vs. the prior expectation of 4.6% (the current rate is 5.5%) which means they think we will be dealing with higher inflation for longer. It also means they think the economy will just gradually slow and avoid recession (but somehow looking at history, things rarely tend to turn out that way).

šŸ‡ØšŸ‡³ China collapsing? Not sure we 100% agree with an imminent collapse hypothesis, but we do agree with this economistā€™s opinion that Chinaā€™s economy is not as strong as the traditional media would have you believe.

šŸ’šŸ¼ Trust, but verify. Weā€™ve all at some point had a friend (or maybe even your kid) ask us to invest in something. Thatā€™s why we created a quick guide of 5 steps you should take before parting with your hard earned money.

šŸ“± More data breaches. More reminders to watch who you (or your kids) give data to. Even Microsoft just reported that the AI team accidentally leaked 38TB of private company data. Whoops.

šŸ¤‘ Our money personality is ā€œThe Plannerā€. Believe it or not we all actually have a money personality; find out which one of these 8 personality types fit you, your partner or your kids.

šŸš‘ Get healthy and avoid taxes. According to IRS data, only about one in ten Americans has an Health Savings Account (HSA). Letā€™s talk about what they are, how they work, and how they can benefit you and your family.

šŸ‘€ Side eyeing this side hustle. Neurolink is looking for volunteers for their first human trial around a brain implant chip. Some unconfirmed research we did says you can earn $50,000 or more (this is a wild Reddit thread), but weā€™re still not so sure weā€™d be the first ones lining up for this.

šŸ§ø No more toy clutter. If you want to get rid of toy clutter while also teaching your kids the valuable lesson of giving, here are some places we found that accept toy donations. And after giving them all away, maybe look into renting new ones instead.

šŸ” Chicken dinner recall. Conagraā€™s Banquet Chicken Strips Meal recently was recalled due to plastic in the food. Here is where you can find the class action lawsuit.

Dates To Mark On Your Money Calendarā€¦

September 26th

Today weā€™ll get the S&P Case-Shiller home price index which is a read on how home prices are trending nationally (the index looks at data from 20 cities).

With prices and rates remaining elevated, we are also starting to see more innovation to help buyers like venture capital backed Roam or Zillowā€™s 1% down payment option (currently only rolled it out in Arizona).

We would expect to see more creative innovation pop up over the next 6 months so keep your eyes peeled if you are looking to buy or sell a home.

September 29th

Today weā€™ll get the latest government data on consumer spending and income for August with the release of the The Personal Income and Outlays report by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA).

As it relates to the consumer in general, weā€™re starting to see more risks pile up in the fourth quarter (resumption of student loans, more credit usage, ending of pandemic savings) that are likely to bring challenges.
