Money Trends To Know
š¦ Selling a loser can be a good (tax) decision. Every year as we get closer to December 31st there tends to be a period of time where stocks that have done poorly year to date do even worse. The reason for this is something called ātax loss sellingā and you should know what it is and how to use it to your advantage.
š¢ļø Oil prices are moving higher (again). We are watching the recent rise in oil prices of over 30% with some caution due to their effect on supply chain and transportation costs. If prices continue to stay at current levels or move higher it would be a major negative for the economy.
šŖ The research saysā¦ A recent study found that this parenting style hurts a childās confidence and self esteem in the long run. A second study also highlighted the unique effect that dadās have on their kids (especially in the early years).
š± Waitā¦you always have to text before calling now? Not sure what qualifies someone to be an āexpertā in cell phone etiquette but the Washington Post apparently does and is telling us how to properly use our phones.
š October should be a good month for the stock market. At least thatās what history would say. Besides this year, since 1961 there have been 10 other times the stock market has been up over +5% year to date and also had a down month of September. Nine out of these 10 times October turned out to be a positive month for stock returns (the one time it wasnāt was 1987 and the Black Monday crash, but letās ignore that one).
š§ Costco is selling gold bars. Yep, you read that right. Costco announced that they are now selling actual gold bars. The retailer is hoping those of us planning to store gold bars for the end of the world will also pick up toothpaste in bulk.

š The sky is falling. JP Morgan Chase was in the headlines this past week warning of doom and gloom. First, CEO Jamie Dimon laid out what he thought was the worst case scenario for the economy from here. Then their chief strategist was out telling clients the market looks an awful lot like the disastrous 2008. We arenāt as negative but do pay attention when people like Jamie Dimon talk about the economy.
šØš³ Chinese influence in schools or much ado about nothing? The U.S. House of Representatives recently held a hearing around Chinese government backed funding of American public schools. Admittedly itās hard to tell what the truth is here in between all the partisan bickering, but itās worth at least bringing the story to our parents so you can decide for yourself.
šø Womenās volleyball is turning pro. With two girls at home we are admittedly biased but we loved reading this story about a pro league starting next year after a youth volleyball group recently raised $35 million from investors.

Answer: Mutual funds must sell stocks by October 31st of this year to realize a capital gain or loss. If you own a stock that is inexplicably moving lower this month, the reason may be that a mutual fund may be selling it (and this could be an opportunity for you if you have done your homework).
